Knitting Pattern: Tilting at Cables

I might manage to post more later, but for now I just have a new pattern to share. I knit some hats for last-minute Christmas gifts, and after playing around in the first couple of hats with some cables and some bias patterns, I ended up with this rather nifty hat that combines both techniques. You have an easy 6-stitch cable that goes up the hat at an angle, created by using increases and decreases to make bias panels. I made two of them in Mizzou colors for my cousins, but it would look good in a single color too - probably also in variegated yarn, since it is a fairly simple cable, but I haven't tried that. Mabe it would look too busy in that many colors.

TILTING AT CABLES HAT
Yarn: Any worsted weight (I used Patons Classic Wool Merino in Black and Old Gold)
Needles: US 8, 16" circular needles
Gauge and Finished Size: I confess, I did not even pause to measure the gauge these came out at. That is probably due to the fact that I finished the last hat just minutes before Christmas dinner, after which came the gift exchange, so I was just hurrying to stuff it into a gift bag. :-) Anyway, due to all the ribbing, it is a nice stretchy hat that would fit most any adult head. (It fits my 23" head fine, and my cousins' might be even larger. I didn't measure them either.) If you don't like the tightness or looseness of the stitches on size 8 needles, adjust accordingly.

Pattern:

With Main Color, CO 96. Join in a circle, being careful not to twist stitches.

Ribbing:
Round 1: *K2 P2. Repeat from * around.
Repeat Round 1 for 1/2".

Setup Row:
K2, *Place marker, (P2, K2) 4 times, P1, Place marker, P1, (K2, P2) 3 times, K2. Repeat from * 3 times.

Cable/Bias Pattern:

Cable terms:
CABLE 3 FRONT: I did the cabling without a cable needle as per Grumperina's instructions and highly recommend it. If you want to use a cable needle, then when you read Cable 3 Front, you should: Place the next 3 stitches on a cable needle and hold them to the front of the work. Knit the next three stitches. Knit the 3 stitches from the cable needle.

Round 1: *Before marker, M1 purlwise. Slip Marker. P2, K2, P2, Cable 3 Front. P2, K2, P1. Slip Marker. P2tog, K1. (P2, K2) 3 times to next marker. Repeat from * 3 times. P1. Slip marker.
Round 2: *P2, K2, P2, K6, P2, K2, P2, K1. (P2, K2) 3 times. P1. Repeat from * 3 times total.
Round 3: *Before marker, M1 purlwise. Slip Marker. P2, K2, P2, K6, P2, K2, P1. Slip Marker. P2tog. (P2, K2) 3 times. P1. Repeat from * 3 times. P1. Slip Marker.
Round 4: *P2, K2, P2, K6, P2, K2, P4. (K2, P2) 3 times. Repeat from * 3 times total.
Round 5: *Before marker, M1 knitwise. Slip Marker. P2, K2, P2, K6, P2, K2, P1. Slip Marker. P2tog, P1. (K2, P2) 3 times. Repeat from * 3 times. K1. Slip Marker.
Round 6: *P2, K2, P2, K6, P2, K2, P3. (K2, P2) 3 times. K1. Repeat from * 3 times total.
Round 7: *Before marker, M1 knitwise. Slip Marker. P2, K2, P2, K6, P2, K2, P1. Slip Marker. P2tog. (K2, P2) 3 times. K1. Repeat from * 3 times. K1. Slip Marker.
Round 8: *P2, K2, P2, K6 (P2, K2) 5 times. Repeat from * 3 times total.

If making the hat in one color, work Cable pattern rows 1-8 three times, then skip ahead to the Crown section below.

If making the hat in two colors as pictured, work Cable pattern rows 1-8 once in Main Color. Work rows 1-3 again, then join Contrast Color as follows:
Round 4: Join Contrast Color and K the entire round.
Continue rounds 5-8 in Contrast Color. Work Cable pattern rows 1-8 and then rows 1-3 once more, then join Main Color on round 4.
Round 4: Join Main Color and K the entire round.
Continue rounds 5-8 in Main Color, then work Crown section below.

Crown:
Work Cable pattern round 1.
Round 2-7: Work Cable pattern rounds 2-7 as before, BUT in place of the K6 each time you come to the cable, work K2, P2, K2.
Round 8 last time: *(P2, K2) 3 times, Place Marker. Repeat from * 8 times total.
Crown Decrease Section:
Decrease Round: *Work P2, K2 rib until 2 stitches before marker. K2 tog. Repeat from * 8 times total.
Repeat Decrease Round every round until 16 stitches remain. K2tog around; 8 stitches remain. Break yarn leaving a 6" tail. Thread the tail on a tapestry needle and pull it through the live stitches; pull to tighten. Weave in ends.
